2018 Solar Fiesta

&

Community Fair

(10 am to 4 pm)

Help us make it happen!

Be a part of this momentous event!

The 2018 Solar Fiesta and Community Fair promises to be bigger and more relevant than ever before, as we prepare to show the state what it would be like in the new, TRUE clean energy future. Yes, we are establishing a fossil fuel free zone. No, it will not be perfect nor easy, but with your help, we’ll do it. In addition, some of the proceeds will go toward a community solar project at the Sawmill Community Land Trust (SCLT).

To accomplish major undertakings such as this, we’re asking for your personal and financial support.  This family-friendly community event will be held on Saturday, October 20th from 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM this year.  We are beginning earlier and going bigger, in this, our 16th Solar Fiesta. There will be an area with fun for all ages, educational displays, treasure hunts, prizes, musicians, food, a variety of electric vehicles and more.

The renewable energy movement continues to grow in our state of New Mexico!  We received funding from the McCune Foundation last year to partner with Architecture, Construction, and Engineering (ACE) Leadership High School. That funding covered the transportation of the old SunChasers II trailer from Taos to Albuquerque, its photovoltaic reconstruction including new panel and batteries, as well as introductory instruction to the world of solar and sustainability for several ACE teachers and their students. They are champing at the bit to take it around to other schools, but it needs more work, including a new wheel base.

Last year we received sponsorship from Sol Luna Solar, Affordable Solar, PNM and some in-kind Fiesta management from Paul Borgerson at Earthstar Energy Consultants for a new type of Solar Fiesta. Their sponsorship cemented a community partnership with SCLT to include artisans, the Tesla Owners Club of New Mexico, a SunChaser visit from ACE and some wonderful musicians at the 2017 Solar Fiesta and Community Fair. In addition, it was as no-waste as KnoWaste could handle and we included a free bicycle valet thanks to Sports Systems and bikeABQ. The monies from this Fiesta continue to sustain NMSEA in its mission to promote solar and sustainability.

Since the 2017 Solar Fiesta, we’ve established a PV-EV club, Thermablitz club, and continue to be a presence at ACE. We have promoted STEM through cash prizes for science fair projects and demonstrations at various events through the city and state. Our chapters carry our efforts beyond Albuquerque. We have strategically partnered with the New Mexico chapter of 350.org for advocacy,  the Department of Energy for Community Solar, and ACE for continued youth engagement.

In addition, our president is now chair of the Albuquerque Energy Council monitoring the 25% solar by 2025 efforts among other energy efficiency projects. Several of our board members are involved as leaders via 350.org, Santa Fe schools, EMNRD, various businesses, and legislative candidates to lead the transition to 100% renewable energy and a sustainable lifestyle. None of this comes easy as we have no office or paid staff, and continually fight off the negativity of the entrenched oil and gas supporters. All for a good cause, though….our children’s future!
